"Facade XXV, Portals" was created to illustrate an artist's talk I gave at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center, describing my process of creating abstract art. As I created this piece, some of the rectangles in larger rectangles seemed to be something like a door, or a portal. Some seem welcoming, some are forbidding. Some of the dark scythe-like marks are reminiscent of dark alleyways in old cities. They are tantalizing in their mystery. Where do they go?

This piece was selected for exhibit in "The Art and Soul of Quilting" juried show, at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosa, WI in 2006.

I have used loosely woven scrim, like cheesecloth, stitched to sheer silk organza, creating subtle color and value shifts as one color is placed to overlap another. By using a sheer foundation, the translucence of the entire piece creates a mesmerizing work of art. Light flows through it, and changes its appearance with changing light.

Once it is stitched to the silk organza, it is strong and will last for years with reasonable care. It would need to be gently shaken a couple of times a year, and needs to be hung out of direct sunlight.
